Nintendo has announced Metroid Ravenous, a new side-scrolling installment in the Metroid series, scheduled for release on the Nintendo Switch 2 on January 28, 2027. The reveal came during a Nintendo Direct broadcast, accompanied by a trailer showcasing Samus Aran facing new threats.

The trailer depicts Samus being attacked by unknown enemies who drain her energy, leading her to state, "It's eat or be eaten." She further elaborates in the trailer, "I was attacked by unknown assailants and sustained grave injuries. I don't know where I am, getting back to the surface won't be easy. My chances of getting off this moon are slim at best. Still... I will survive. And I will make it home. Even if I have to feed on my enemies to do so."

Development of Metroid Ravenous appears to be handled by MercurySteam, the Spanish studio responsible for Metroid Dread and the 3DS remake Metroid: Samus Returns. Metroid Dread itself was lauded for its exploration, modern combat, and boss fights, earning a 9/10 in IGN's review.

The side-scrolling Metroid games, including Dread and Ravenous, are separate from the first-person Metroid Prime subseries in their narrative. Ravenous is positioned chronologically after Metroid Dread and will not directly continue the story of Metroid Prime 4.

Alongside the game announcement, Nintendo revealed an accompanying amiibo collection featuring figures of Samus and a Chozo Statue. A special edition of Metroid Ravenous will also be available, including the game and a SteelBook case, which will bundle a third amiibo: Samus (Metroid Suit). The name Metroid Ravenous had previously surfaced through a deleted ratings board listing in Brazil, sparking fan speculation that it might be connected to Metroid Dread's antagonist, Raven Beak.
