The City of Miami Beach has approved a marketing campaign for Rockstar Games' highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, following a 4-3 vote by the city commission. The agreement, set to run from October 15 to December 31, will see Rockstar pay the city at least $3 million in exchange for the presence of subtle game-related logos and branding.

This decision comes as GTA VI's Vice City setting is based on Miami, Florida, and Rockstar aims to leverage this connection. The vote occurred on September 10, 2026, with the marketing window coinciding with the game's planned release in November 2026.

Arguments presented during the commission meeting highlighted both the potential benefits and controversies surrounding the campaign. Commissioner David Suarez voiced strong opposition, citing the violent nature of the Grand Theft Auto series, which includes actions such as car theft, drug dealing, and murder. He argued that the city should not assist in promoting a game that depicts criminal activities, especially given Miami Beach's efforts to move away from an image of chaos and lawlessness.

Conversely, supporters of the deal emphasized the reality of the game's global reach. Commissioner Joseph Magazine stated that millions worldwide will experience a fictionalized version of Miami Beach through GTA VI regardless of the city's decision, arguing that embracing the partnership is a pragmatic approach. Commissioner Matteo-Salinas, who identified as a gamer herself, argued that playing the game does not equate to engaging in criminal behavior.

Details of the marketing execution were discussed, with Commissioner Laura Dominguez clarifying that the campaign would be "discreet." Logos will not be placed on city property like lifeguard stands or in prominent public spaces. Instead, branding such as "Vice City" or the Roman numeral "VI" may appear on items like chairs and umbrellas, potentially in partnership with Boucher Brothers, a company previously parodied within the Grand Theft Auto series as "Sol Sisters."

Rockstar will also be prohibited from advertising during the city's Art Basel event. The financial contribution from Rockstar is considered critical for Miami Beach, with Commissioner Tanya K. Bhatt suggesting the total benefits could reach closer to $4 million. A portion of these funds could be allocated to much-needed renovations for Florida's Flamingo Park Memorial Football Field, a project currently lacking sufficient funding.

Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Xbox Series X/S
