Universal Pictures has unveiled the first official look at its upcoming Miami Vice reboot, officially titled Miami Vice '85. The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick and the upcoming F1 racing movie, stars Michael B. Jordan as Detective Tubbs and Austin Butler as Detective Crockett.
The image shows Jordan and Butler in character, hinting at the film's return to the stylish aesthetic of 1980s Miami. The script comes from Dan Gilroy, writer of Nightcrawler. Production is now underway, with a planned release date of May 19, 2028.
Joining Jordan and Butler in the supporting cast are Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, André Holland, and Michael Irby.
The original Miami Vice television series, created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive-produced by Michael Mann, originally aired on NBC from 1984 to 1989. It starred Don Johnson as Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Tubbs and is widely credited with inspiring the setting and tone of Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Mann himself directed a modernized film adaptation in 2006, featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell in the lead detective roles. Kosinski's Miami Vice '85 aims to capture the original series' iconic 1980s atmosphere.
