Sony has announced a new Midnight Black variant of its disc-less PlayStation 5 console, which will be available exclusively in Japan starting November 19. This release coincides with the launch date of GTA 6.
The Midnight Black PS5 Digital Edition is priced at ¥55,000 (approximately $380 USD or £263 GBP). This console is based on the region-locked PS5 model that Sony initially launched in Japan last November. Crucially, the console's language cannot be changed from Japanese, and it is only compatible with PlayStation Network accounts registered in Japan, preventing its export.
A Midnight Black Blu-ray disc drive will also be available for purchase, allowing users to maintain access to physical media. This release comes amidst high demand for the PS5 Pro in Japan, where Sony has implemented a lottery system to manage distribution due to supply shortages.
For players outside of Japan, Sony offers Midnight Black Console Covers for the standard PS5 model, priced at $54 USD or £45 GBP. These covers can be easily swapped out to achieve a similar aesthetic. A Midnight Black DualSense controller is also available worldwide. However, the Blu-ray disc drive is currently only available in the standard white color. It remains possible that Sony may release the Midnight Black version of the console and its accompanying disc drive to other regions after its initial launch in Japan.
