Mike Flanagan Calls Warhammer 40K Series Adaptation 'Brutally Difficult'

Mike Flanagan, known for his successful adaptations of Stephen King's works and Netflix's horror series, has described the development of Amazon's live-action Warhammer 40,000 television series as a significant challenge. He is collaborating on the project with star and executive producer Henry Cavill, a vocal fan of the Warhammer franchise.

A Daunting Task

During an appearance on The Process Unlocked podcast, Flanagan characterized the adaptation as "climbing my adaptation Everest." He highlighted the sheer volume of lore, the hundreds of novels, and the thousands of years of fictional history within the Warhammer 40,000 universe as major hurdles. The franchise's extensive cast of characters and its vast timeline present a complex narrative landscape to navigate.

"These are novel lengths. These are not small. But there are so many characters. It takes place over so many thousands of years. There's so much there," Flanagan stated. "The challenge is how do you get in? That's really a brutally difficult adaptation, but it's been so fun for it."

Navigating Extensive Lore

Flanagan contrasted the Warhammer 40,000 adaptation with his work on Stephen King's The Dark Tower series. He noted that King's method of introducing readers to the world, beginning with a focused premise like a gunslinger pursuing a foe, provides a clearer entry point. "Seventy percent of my job is done for me by Steve," Flanagan remarked, indicating that Warhammer is not as straightforward.

The Warhammer 40,000 universe, created by Games Workshop, is set in a grim future characterized by interstellar warfare, alien threats, and supernatural horrors. Its rich multimedia presence, including novels and games, contributes to the vastness of the source material.

Project Status

Amazon's adaptation is reportedly in its early stages. Games Workshop confirmed in a July financial report that initial outlines had been completed, with Flanagan expected to move on to scriptwriting. The company has cautioned that screen adaptations typically require years to develop, and specific details regarding the series' release date and narrative focus remain undisclosed. Flanagan's previous projects include adaptations like Doctor Sleep and the upcoming Carrie. He is also developing a television adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower.
