Mike Flanagan Details Faithful Approach to The Dark Tower TV Adaptation

Mike Flanagan, known for his work on "The Haunting of Hill House" and "Midnight Mass," has shared new insights into his planned television adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series. Flanagan emphasized his commitment to adapting the books faithfully, a process that will begin with the first novel, "The Gunslinger."

Flanagan explained that King's novels provide a strong foundation for adaptation, particularly the opening of "The Gunslinger" with its stark imagery of "the man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." He praised King's method of gradually introducing the expansive universe, starting with just two characters and minimal setting, allowing the audience to acclimate without being overwhelmed. Flanagan intends to replicate this approach in his series, avoiding the pitfalls of adaptations that attempt to jump into the narrative at different points.

Flanagan acquired the rights for the adaptation in December 2022, with plans for the series to potentially span five seasons, mirroring the first five books, and conclude with two films covering the final novels. The project is being developed under Flanagan's Intrepid Pictures banner as part of his existing deal with Prime Video.

He noted that the adaptation process has been lengthy, partly due to the intricate web of references to other Stephen King novels within "The Dark Tower" series. Securing the rights for these interconnected elements has presented legal complexities that are still being navigated. Flanagan described the project as an "oil tanker," indicating its large scale and the time required for development. This new television adaptation will follow the 2017 film version of "The Dark Tower," which starred Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey.
