Mike P. Nelson has been appointed director for the upcoming Saw film, signaling a new chapter for the long-running horror franchise. Nelson, known for his work on the Wrong Turn reboot and Silent Night, Deadly Night, will bring his distinct filmmaking style to Jigsaw's next set of deadly games. The script comes from Gregory Weidman & Geoff Tock.
Franchise creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell are producing, with Wan expressing confidence in Nelson's vision. "Mike has a raw, distinctive filmmaking voice with an inventive approach to the genre, and I believe he’ll bring something truly unique and special to the franchise," Wan stated. Nelson echoed this enthusiasm, calling the opportunity to work on the Saw universe a "dream come true" and praising the script for its blend of original mystery and new, "insane bloody ideas."
While details about the plot remain scarce, Wan and Whannell have confirmed that Jigsaw will be a central figure, a move they believe is essential for any Saw film. They aim to recapture the spirit of the original movie, focusing on Jigsaw's philosophy and motivations. This emphasis on the core character suggests a potential return to the franchise's roots, even as new, bloody concepts are introduced.
This development follows a period of uncertainty for the franchise, with previous sequel plans reportedly stalling due to creative disagreements. It appears that the next installment will diverge from the immediate continuation of Saw X, which had explored Jigsaw's life prior to his death.
In parallel, Bloober Team is developing a new Saw video game titled Saw: Genesis. This multiplayer title will feature a format where three players must navigate deadly traps, while a fourth player controls the environment and attempts to eliminate them.
