Former NFL head coach Mike Tomlin has unveiled an elaborate Minecraft city he has been meticulously constructing over the past 12 years. The sprawling metropolis, showcased in a YouTube video, features a detailed waterfront district with skyscrapers, hotels, and apartment buildings, each boasting unique color schemes and architectural elements. Tomlin began playing Minecraft around 2014 after being introduced to the game by his children, and found the creative mode to be a therapeutic escape from the pressures of his coaching career.
A Detailed Urban Landscape
Tomlin's creation includes a boutique hotel built from red sandstone with marble and birchwood walkways. This structure features a multi-floor spa, a glass-ceilinged conference room, an indoor-outdoor restaurant with balcony seating, and recreated public restrooms. The city also incorporates themed residential high-rises that double as aquariums, complete with detailed bedroom interiors, as well as recreations of CVS pharmacies, baseball fields, and soccer stadiums. Throughout the build, Tomlin focused on both the aesthetics and the interior lighting, considering the views from within the structures.
Coaching Career vs. Creative Pursuits
The reveal has drawn attention to the period during which Tomlin was developing his Minecraft city, which coincided with a decline in the Pittsburgh Steelers' postseason performance. From 2007 to 2013, Tomlin's teams had a playoff win rate of 62.5%. However, between 2014 and 2025, during the years he was building his Minecraft project, the Steelers' postseason win rate dropped to 25%, with only three playoff wins over nine consecutive years without a playoff victory.
Tomlin's son, Mayce, also humorously recalled his father monopolizing the PlayStation during this time. The first video showcasing Tomlin's Minecraft world is planned as the initial episode in a series, with more tours expected to be released on Tomlin's YouTube channel.
