Mina the Hollower's Success Secures Yacht Club Games' Future 'For Now'

Yacht Club Games has confirmed that its latest title, Mina the Hollower, has provided the studio with the necessary sales boost to continue operating, albeit with a note of caution. The 2D, Zelda-inspired action RPG's performance has eased concerns about the studio's financial stability following a prolonged development period.

Studio co-founder Cris Velasco had previously stated that Mina the Hollower's success was a make-or-break situation for the company. He indicated that sales of around 100,000 copies would be concerning, while 200,000 would be considered great. Months after its release, Mina the Hollower has sold over 500,000 copies in just a few weeks. "We're to remain afloat... for now," co-founder Sean Velasco stated in a recent Reddit AMA, as reported by Eurogamer.

Looking ahead, Yacht Club Games has plans for significant updates to Mina the Hollower, including the addition of randomizer and speedrunning modes. Concurrently, the majority of the development team is engaged in creating a new 3D game, though details remain scarce. Designer Alec Faulkner expressed enthusiasm for the unannounced project, calling it "soooooooo awesome."

The positive reception to Mina the Hollower, which earned a 90% rating from PC Gamer for its "gloriously gothic combination of ferocious combat and beautiful scenery," appears to have revitalized the studio. The game is also slated to make its fighting game debut in a crossover title next year.
