Minecraft Dungeons 2 is intentionally moving closer to the mechanics and feel of the original Minecraft, a departure from its predecessor's approach. Developers Måns Olson and Laura de Llorens Garcia stated that this shift is possible because the Dungeons franchise has now established its own distinct identity.
"As much as Dungeons 1 tried to interpret vanilla Minecraft--and I think we did a pretty good job of it--with some of the things that we had deviated from, we decided to take them even closer to vanilla," de Llorens Garcia explained to GameSpot. The sequel will feature systems familiar to vanilla Minecraft players, such as four distinct armor slots, Enchantment Books, and the ability to jump. "I think the fact that those systems now work that way makes it feel a lot closer to base game Minecraft," she added.
When the first Minecraft Dungeons was developed, the team aimed to differentiate it significantly from the base game. "In that world, it was very important that we made Minecraft Dungeons stand out--a game that didn't feel like the base game, that felt different enough to stand on its own legs and bring something new to the table," Olson said. This led to choices like omitting mining and crafting mechanics, which Olson acknowledged sounded unusual but was necessary to establish the Dungeons brand as a unique entity, rather than merely a mod.
With Dungeons 2, the team felt it had the creative freedom to reintroduce elements closer to vanilla Minecraft due to the established identity of the Dungeons line. The sequel also features larger, more interconnected environments, increasing the emphasis on exploration compared to the first game. "We did push the world to be bigger and more exploratory in this game compared to the first game and that brings us closer to vanilla," Olson noted.
This closer alignment extends beyond Dungeons 2 itself. Developers have collaborated with the vanilla Minecraft team on The Sift, a new dimension being introduced in Dungeons 2 that is also slated to arrive in Minecraft in 2027.
