Microsoft has updated the official system requirements for Minecraft Java Edition, significantly increasing the recommended RAM and GPU specifications for optimal performance. The new recommended configuration now calls for 16GB of RAM and an Nvidia RTX 2060 or equivalent graphics card.
This marks a substantial increase from previous recommendations. An archived snapshot from May of last year suggested only 4GB of RAM and an Nvidia 700-series GPU. Even a snapshot from 2022 showed a recommendation of 4GB or 8GB of RAM. The minimum requirements have also been adjusted, now recommending 8GB of RAM (or 12GB for integrated graphics) and at least an Nvidia GTX 950 or equivalent GPU.
The updated specifications also reflect higher CPU recommendations, with the recommended processor now being an Intel Core i5 12400 or AMD Ryzen 5 5600.
Rationale Behind the Changes
Microsoft has stated that these updates do not necessarily mean the game has become more demanding. Instead, the company is updating the listed requirements to accurately reflect the current state of the game and what is needed for a smooth experience. "While older devices may still launch the game, they will struggle to deliver a good experience," Microsoft explained. This can manifest as low frame rates, visual glitches, long loading times, or performance that doesn't meet player expectations.
Furthermore, aligning requirements with current hardware capabilities is crucial for ongoing development. "Supporting hardware that no longer runs the game well can limit what we’re able to modernize behind the scenes," the company noted. Clearer recommendations allow the development team to focus on improving Minecraft Java Edition for players with capable hardware.
Despite the updated figures, Minecraft Java Edition remains relatively lightweight compared to many contemporary titles. The 16GB RAM recommendation is now standard even for budget PC builds, and an RTX 2060 is a six-year-old graphics card. For context, games like Halo Infinite's campaign recommend an RTX 3080 Ti or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT. The updated Minecraft requirements still position it as an accessible title for a wide range of PCs.
