Mojang used its annual Minecraft Live event to unveil a slate of new content for its block-building juggernaut, including the game's first new dimension in over a decade, a console release date, and significant updates to its spin-off titles.
Minecraft Dungeons II Announced
The event provided an extended look at Minecraft Dungeons II, the sequel to the 2020 isometric dungeon crawler. While retaining the core gameplay loop, the sequel introduces a host of improvements. Players can expect a vibrant new art style, new dungeons set around the Deep Dark and Ancient Cities, and the addition of a jump mechanic. Armor systems are also being expanded, featuring traditional gear slots alongside new 'talismans' for passive buffs. Levels are larger and interconnected, aiming for a less linear exploration experience compared to the original. The game is scheduled for release on September 29.
The Sift: A New Dimension Arrives
A major highlight of Minecraft Live was the reveal of 'The Sift,' a new dimension set to arrive in both Minecraft's Bedrock and Java editions. This marks the first new dimension added to the core game since 'The End' debuted in 2011, with Nether arriving in 2010. The Sift will feature its own unique biomes and mobs, promising new gameplay possibilities. While details remain somewhat scarce, 'The Sift' is confirmed to be a significant addition, with its elements expected to influence gameplay similarly to how the Nether and End have in the past. The dimension is slated for release in the main game next year, though some of its elements will appear in Minecraft Dungeons II sooner.
Underground Ice Caves and Creative Tools
Upcoming updates will also introduce expansive underground ice caves to existing biomes. These rare locations will be rich in ores and provide a source of ice. The caves will host a new mob, the frozen zombie, which can launch ice balls and inflict a freezing effect on players. These ice balls can be collected and used to craft freezing potions or used offensively. The glowing ice crystals found within these caves will serve as decorative items and a light source. Players will also be able to farm frozen zombies by exposing regular zombies to powdered snow.
Beyond new environments and combat encounters, Mojang also detailed advancements to the game's content creation tools. These updates aim to make player-created content more accessible and involved for a wider range of creators. Additionally, new sound effect packs will be available on the Marketplace, allowing players to alter the audio of the base game and their own custom creations.
Nintendo Switch 2 Release and Themed Attractions
Finally, it was announced that Minecraft will launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 27, featuring enhanced graphics. The event also touched upon the upcoming theme park area at Chessington World of Adventure in the UK and a related hotel, though these are primarily of interest to UK residents.
