A new mod for Minecraft, titled Soulbound, has dramatically altered the game's combat system, transforming it into a turn-based RPG reminiscent of titles like Undertale and Deltarune. Released approximately seven months ago by modder Pixelcite, the mod has recently surged in popularity following its substantial 2.0 update. According to the Minecraft modding platform Modrinth, Soulbound has now been downloaded over 140,000 times.
The mod introduces a suite of RPG elements, requiring players to allocate stats, select buffs, and choose combat styles during character creation. Once in-game, the world appears as standard Minecraft, but encounters with human enemies trigger a turn-based battle system featuring original bullet-hell attack patterns, directly inspired by Deltarune's combat mechanics.
Soulbound also enables the creation of "dark worlds," which function as procedurally generated alternate dimensions within Minecraft. These worlds can be customized with various themes set by the player, offering a unique visual and thematic experience distinct from the base game. For instance, a player created a "wool-themed" dark world by interacting with the game environment.
Contrary to a recent trend of AI-generated mods, Soulbound was reportedly not developed with generative AI assistance. Modrinth, the platform where the mod is hosted, mandates the disclosure of AI use. While attempts were made to confirm this with the lead developer, no response was received. This handcrafted approach contrasts with AI-driven mods that have recently combined disparate game worlds, such as Elden Ring or Skyrim, within Minecraft, sometimes resulting in less cohesive experiences. The developer of Soulbound has been praised for integrating the influences of Undertale and Deltarune in a thoughtful manner that enhances the gameplay rather than simply imposing them.
