Mojang has announced the addition of The Sift, the first entirely new dimension to be incorporated into Minecraft in over 15 years. This ethereal realm, initially developed for Minecraft Dungeons 2, is slated for release in the base game in 2027. The Sift represents a significant expansion for Minecraft, as it is the first new dimension since the introduction of The End in 2011, the dimension where players confront the Ender Dragon.
According to Mans Olson, creative director for Minecraft Dungeons 2, the development team aimed to make The Sift feel distinct from existing dimensions like the Nether and The End, steering clear of creating another predominantly hostile environment. "We wanted to make sure that it was different. That it doesn't feel like the ones that already exist in the game," Olson stated. The intention was to craft a space where players could envision living, a place described as "a bit peaceful, sometimes maybe even serene," in contrast to the overtly dangerous Nether and The End.
While the dimension is not intended to be as immediately hostile as its predecessors, it may not be entirely without peril. In Minecraft Dungeons 2, The Sift faces threats from the Illagers, which endanger its ecosystem. Olson elaborated, "We wanted to make sure that, although it is dangerous, it doesn't feel as hostile or as imposing as the Nether and The End," adding that the goal was to create a "rich and lush and vibrant" ecosystem with a unique color palette.
The concept for The Sift originated from the narrative needs of Minecraft Dungeons 2, but Mojang has collaborated closely with the vanilla Minecraft team throughout its development. This collaboration allowed for consideration of how new elements might integrate into the core game. Olson explained the team's approach: "When we do something new, we always look at, like, is there something there that we can reuse, or modify, or change that will suit the purpose? If there isn't, the new thing that we do, could it be added to [vanilla] Minecraft?" He noted that while integration is a consideration, it is not a requirement.
Visually, The Sift is depicted as a vibrant landscape characterized by red and orange stone, green flora, sculk-like elements, and pools of a hazardous liquid called icor. Access to The Sift is expected to differ between the two games. In Minecraft Dungeons 2, players will encounter mysterious rifts opening in the Overworld. For vanilla Minecraft, the likely entry point involves Ancient City portals, offering players more direct control over their experience.
Although Minecraft Dungeons 2 will feature several new mobs within The Sift, including Sifters, Singers, Neesters, and Sprouts, the specific creatures that will appear in vanilla Minecraft have not yet been confirmed. Minecraft Dungeons 2, featuring The Sift, is scheduled for release on September 29, with the vanilla Minecraft version to follow in 2027.
