Minecraft's upcoming major update, expected to launch in December 2026, will introduce a significant expansion to the game's underground exploration with the addition of ice caves. This new biome, found as a rare extension of existing cold regions, aims to provide greater environmental diversity and an incentive for players to delve deeper into snowy biomes.
Within these ice caves, players will discover ice crystals, a new decorative and light-emitting block that can be placed both vertically and horizontally. The update also brings a new hostile mob, the Frozen Zombie. These creatures pose a new combat challenge by applying a stacking freezing effect with their melee attacks, potentially immobilizing players who are hit too many times. They can also launch ice balls, which deal damage and inflict a knockback effect, similar to the Frozen status effect that players can acquire. Regular zombies can transform into Frozen Zombies when exposed to powdered snow. Defeated Frozen Zombies will drop ice balls, which can also be crafted by players. These ice balls can be used as weapons to replicate the mob's attack or brewed into a new potion that applies a freezing effect.
While the update has not yet been officially named, its release is anticipated around late December 2026. Looking further ahead, Mojang also announced plans to introduce the first new Minecraft dimension in 15 years, scheduled for release in 2027.
