Alpha Dog Games, the studio that developed the mobile game Mighty Doom, has resurfaced as an independent developer. This follows its closure two years ago when Microsoft shut down Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and Alpha Dog Games. The studio's founder, Shawn Woods, has updated his LinkedIn profile to indicate that Alpha Dog Games is operating independently again, with his experience listed from May 2025 to the present.

Previously based in Halifax, Alpha Dog Games focused primarily on mobile titles such as Wraithborne and Ninja Golf. The studio was acquired by Zenimax Media in 2019, and subsequently became part of Microsoft's portfolio in 2021 following Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax. Mighty Doom, a roguelike shoot-em-up, launched for Android and iOS in March 2023 after an initial two-year soft launch period. The game was eventually shut down in 2024, coinciding with the closure of the studio.

Details regarding the current operations of the newly independent Alpha Dog Games, including its team composition, remain scarce. Kotaku has reached out to Shawn Woods for further comment. This news offers a glimmer of positive development amidst a challenging period for the gaming industry, particularly following recent large-scale layoffs at Xbox. A significant number of employees have been let go, with further reductions planned. Several studios have transitioned to independence or found new ownership, including Double Fine and Compulsion moving to independent status, and Ninja Theory and Undead Labs being acquired. The future of Arkane Lyon is also currently uncertain. The reemergence of Alpha Dog Games as an independent entity provides a notable instance of a studio impacted by industry consolidation regaining its footing.
