The development team behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is acutely aware of the increasing skill level of the average player, a factor that has significantly shaped their approach to ensuring a balanced and enjoyable experience in the upcoming title. Multiplayer design lead Jacky Reynolds shared that this evolution in player capability necessitates a deep dive into the game's mechanics to prevent exploits.

"I think in general, the average player is just so much better than they were 15 years ago," Reynolds stated in a recent interview. "A big thing that we have internally, as well as making that victim experience [satisfying], is making sure that we play everything with each other to make sure that there's not any crazy strategies that can break open a whole sandbox." He referenced the notorious One Man Army perk and infinite grenade launcher exploit from the original Modern Warfare 2, illustrating the kind of balance challenges developers aim to avoid.

This infamous exploit allowed players to combine the One Man Army perk with grenade launchers to restock ammunition infinitely, enabling them to bombard enemy spawn areas without direct line of sight. Reynolds indicated that significant effort is being invested to prevent history from repeating itself in Modern Warfare 4. While the developers suggest they do not intentionally introduce unbalanced elements, they are vigilant about monitoring gameplay to ensure fairness. "As far as balancing all those things out, we've tried to lean into the fun, but also making things fair," Reynolds added. "And it's a conversation I'm sure we're going to continue to have after this first weekend. We'll probably get a lot of great feedback on that." The success of these balancing efforts will become clearer as players engage with the game, particularly during its upcoming beta period.
