The newest 6v6 map arriving in Modern Warfare 4, titled 'Backstab,' has been identified by fans as a remake of 'Burgundy,' a map originally featured in Call of Duty 2 back in 2005. This means the design predates many of the younger players who will experience it.
The resemblance was noted by several players, with Reddit user wizward64 highlighting the similarities with visual comparisons. The layout of Backstab appears to be a near 1:1 recreation of Burgundy, though the thematic setting has been altered. While Burgundy was set in a World War II-era French countryside, Backstab seems to take place in a snowy, Eastern European-inspired location, potentially Russia, indicated by Cyrillic script on signage.
Burgundy was a relatively small map in Call of Duty 2, known for its two-story buildings overlooking a central courtyard. These buildings provided strategic vantage points with machine gun emplacements. In Backstab, these windows are expected to serve as sniper positions, adapting the classic design to Modern Warfare 4's faster gameplay.
This revival of a deep-cut map distinguishes itself from more frequent remakes of popular locations like Nuketown or Shipment. Instead, it represents a conscious effort to bring a lesser-known but well-regarded map from earlier in the franchise's history to a new audience. This practice of revisiting older maps has been observed in recent Call of Duty titles, with 'Taraq' from Modern Warfare 2 (2022) being a remake of Call of Duty 1's 'Neuville,' and 'Suldal Harbor' from Modern Warfare (2019) a remake of Call of Duty 1's 'Harbor.'
