Infinity Ward has confirmed that the extreme muzzle flash seen in early gameplay footage of Modern Warfare 4 was a bug, and it will be rectified before the game's beta period. The developer addressed community feedback after numerous content creators and players noted the distracting visual effect during an alpha build demonstration.
The issue, which caused a bright flash and a large puff of smoke to momentarily obscure the screen with nearly every shot fired, was particularly noticeable with high-power weapons like sniper rifles and in darker environments. Several clips circulating online highlighted the severity of the effect, with some viewers likening it to being flash-banged by the player's own weapon.
This visual bug occurred during an early alpha build of the game, which was made available to select content creators for a hands-on preview. While this hands-on was intended to showcase new features like the Kill Block mode, the exaggerated muzzle flash drew significant attention and concern from the community. Many players expressed their dismay on social media platforms, with comments ranging from requests for epilepsy warnings to general bewilderment at the effect's intensity.
In response to the growing online discussion, Infinity Ward released a statement clarifying the situation. "These are pre-release Alpha builds and are still very much a work in progress," the studio stated. "The muzzle flash VFX issue in today's Alpha gameplay is a bug that will be fixed for Beta."
This explanation aligns with previous impressions of the game. Some players who had early access in behind-closed-doors sessions reported a more controlled visual experience. The promise to fix the muzzle flash bug before the beta aims to ensure that players have a more representative experience of the game's intended visuals when testing begins. The beta is expected to start in September, providing another opportunity for players to provide feedback on the game's development.
