Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is set to feature a fully realized DMZ mode, building on the beta released with Modern Warfare 2. This extraction shooter mode, inspired by titles like Escape From Tarkov, aims to offer a more accessible yet deep experience.
Evolving the Extraction Genre
While the extraction shooter genre saw significant attention earlier this year with games like Arc Raiders and Escape From Tarkov, many titles have since seen fluctuating player counts or shifts in focus. Modern Warfare 4's DMZ, however, is poised to enter the scene with four years of development polish and numerous new features. If early impressions hold true, this iteration could become a standout entry in the genre.
Narrative and Objectives
A key element differentiating Modern Warfare 4's DMZ is its approach to quests and narrative integration. DMZ Orders are designed to guide players through the game's core mechanics and story, directing them toward specific objectives across the Hajin map and rewarding them for completion. Beyond these core orders, the mode will also feature dynamic and side operations. An example presented involved a mission to rescue a VIP from a bank vault and extract them safely.
Dynamic Encounters and Bosses
Hajin will also be populated with high-ranking bosses, referred to as lieutenants and commanders. These formidable foes offer a high-risk, high-reward approach to gameplay, potentially requiring players to team up to overcome them. Lieutenants are described as a way to earn significant DMZ XP, cash, and loot, while commanders present a tougher challenge, possibly impervious to standard weaponry and demanding tactical coordination.
Refined Gunplay and Core Mechanics
Call of Duty's long-standing reputation for smooth and responsive first-person shooter gunplay is expected to be a significant advantage for DMZ. Combining this perfected engine with the tense, high-stakes nature of extraction gameplay could prove to be a winning formula. The mode will also introduce unique mechanics like the Forward Operating Base (FOB), which serves as a command center. Within the FOB, players can access features such as a bounty leaderboard to track and hunt down successful PvP players, or purchase intel on bosses from a boss board.
With Modern Warfare 4's DMZ mode, Infinity Ward is not only offering a new experience for Call of Duty fans but also aiming to deliver one of the most compelling extraction shooters available.
