Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 released today, October 23, and its first downloadable content pack is now available. In keeping with series tradition, this day-one DLC is a Call of Duty Endowment (CODE) pack, with all proceeds directed to Activision's charity focused on assisting military veterans in securing employment after their service.
The CODE Valor Pack introduces Medal of Honor recipient Kyle Carpenter as a playable character. Carpenter's story recounts his actions on November 21, 2010, in Marjah, Afghanistan, where he shielded a fellow Marine from a grenade blast, sustaining severe injuries in the process. He was unconscious for five weeks, suffered extensive damage including the loss of an eye, and underwent numerous surgeries for life-threatening wounds.
Carpenter was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama in 2014. At the ceremony, Obama noted the severity of Carpenter's injuries, stating he was "literally wounded from the top of his head to his feet." Carpenter's treatment included brain surgery to remove shrapnel, around 40 additional surgeries for injuries like a collapsed lung and fractured bones, and multiple skin grafts. He now has a prosthetic eye, a new jaw, and replacement teeth.
The Valor Pack contains the "Valor" and "Relentless" operator skins, "Forged Resolve" M4 Assault Rifle Blueprint, "Still Standing" Rezi 12 Shotgun Blueprint, "Worth Fighting For" Combat Knife Melee Blueprint, "Nice Try" Weapon Charm, "Steel Talon" Weapon Sticker, "Forged in Valor" Calling Card, "Earned, Not Given" Emblem, and "Blood, Sweat, & Sand" Loading Screen. Additionally, the pack includes a one-hour Double Level XP Token and a one-hour Double Weapon XP Token.
Each $20 DLC bundle's full proceeds will be donated to the CODE charity. Modern Warfare 4 currently holds an 84 on Metacritic. GameSpot's review of the game covers its campaign, DMZ, and multiplayer modes.
