Modern Warfare 4 to Feature Expanded DMZ Mode with Deeper Progression

Infinity Ward is bringing the DMZ extraction mode back for Modern Warfare 4, featuring a more evolved experience with deeper player progression and expanded gameplay options. Activision's recent blog post outlines significant changes to the mode, which will be included as part of the premium Modern Warfare 4 package rather than a free-to-play beta.

Players will deploy into DMZ matches on Hajin, a new open-world map designed for looting, objective completion, and combat against both AI-controlled enemies and rival players. Success in extraction means keeping scavenged rewards, while failure results in the loss of all carried valuables and gear. Operators themselves can be recovered for a fee, but dying means their permanent loss.

A new DMZ player progression system ranges from level one to 70, with experience gained through looting, combat, and objective completion. The mode will offer a greater variety of missions and objectives than its predecessor, including story-driven DMZ Orders that tie into Modern Warfare 4's post-launch narrative. Dynamic operations will provide clear in-match objectives, while side operations offer a less intense way to explore Hajin, earn XP, find resources, and gather intel.

Lieutenant Hunts are also available, presenting high-value targets in exchange for DMZ XP, in-game cash, and valuable loot, potentially including rare keys for special locked rooms. Players are not obligated to pursue these specific activities, as the mode supports a more sandbox-style approach to exploration and engagement within Hajin. The map itself will feature dynamic weather and constant threats from both NPCs and other operators.

Each DMZ match will conclude with an After Action Report, detailing XP earned, loot acquired, and a match rating based on mission contributions, combat, and looting efforts. Leveling up unlocks new rewards and upgrades for the Forward Operations Base, serving as a social hub and preparation area.

Infinity Ward's "From The Ward" docuseries has also teased post-launch content for DMZ, including a new map similar to Modern Warfare 2's Building 21 for Season 1 and expansions to Hajin's playable areas in Season 2, alongside special events.

Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to launch on October 23 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
