Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance Expansion to Bring Master Rank and New Gameplay Mechanics

Capcom is preparing to significantly expand the endgame and introduce new gameplay elements to Monster Hunter Wilds with its upcoming Ascendance expansion, slated for release in 2027. The expansion aims to address player feedback regarding the base game's difficulty and offer a more robust experience for veteran hunters.

Evolving the Monster Hunter Formula

Monster Hunter Wilds, despite being a massive seller, faced criticism at launch for its PC performance and a perceived lack of challenge compared to previous series entries. Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto stated that the development team has been actively reviewing player feedback from both new and longtime fans to inform future updates and the Ascendance expansion. Game director Takuro Hiraoka described Ascendance as a "true evolution" of Monster Hunter Wilds, building upon its foundation while improving areas that players have requested be addressed.

The expansion will feature a new story campaign set several years after the events of the base game, following hunters as they venture into the aerial territory known as the Skybound Eyrie. This new location promises more vertical and complex terrain. Accompanying the new environment are new monsters, including the Araketa and its minions, and new gear to craft.

A significant new gameplay addition is the Boost Bracer ability. Unlocked during the Ascendance campaign, this ability allows hunters to unleash a super attack with their weapon, followed by a limited-time boost phase that amplifies combos and strikes. While not a direct parallel, the developers noted it carries a similar concept to temporary power-up states seen in other action games, aiming to add a visually impressive, anime-inspired element to combat.

Reintroducing Master Rank Difficulty

One of the most anticipated features of Ascendance is the return of Master Rank, the highest difficulty tier in the Monster Hunter series. Hiraoka acknowledged player feedback on streamlining, difficulty, and endgame content, emphasizing that Master Rank in Ascendance is designed to deliver the challenging and deep encounters veteran players expect. The goal is to foster a loop where players are motivated to craft specific armor and weapons to overcome increasingly difficult quests.

Capcom intends for Ascendance to provide substantial endgame content, giving players challenging opportunities to test their skills and crafted equipment. With the return of elder dragons and other formidable monsters, Ascendance is positioned to be a significant update that could provide the boost Monster Hunter Wilds needs to solidify its place in the series' history.
