Capcom has announced significant changes coming to Monster Hunter Wilds with its upcoming Ascendance expansion, slated for release next year. This substantial update will introduce a new region known as the Eastlands, along with a fresh roster of monsters, including elder dragons. The expansion's most notable addition is a new mechanic called Boost Bracer, which promises to alter the game's combat tempo.

Boost Bracer mechanics involve players building up a special energy meter through aggressive play. Once this meter is filled, hunters can activate Boost mode via a Boost Driver attack. In this powered-up state, existing attacks are enhanced, and entirely new moves become available. Capcom has stated that Boost mode improves each of the game's 14 weapon types, making them more effective at their intended roles. For instance, dual blades will gain increased speed, shields will offer greater defense, and the bow will gain a finisher capable of inflicting staggers.

Each weapon will receive unique abilities tied to the Boost mechanic. Capcom has released dedicated videos showcasing these updates, including an example for the Greatsword that demonstrates its capacity to chain offset counters against multiple powerful attacks and deliver consistent staggers while boosted. Players have reacted positively to early footage of Boost Bracer, finding the new moves stylish and satisfying.

However, the new system has also raised concerns among a portion of the player base. Some players worry that the hypercharged nature of Boost Bracer may steer the series away from its traditionally more deliberate combat roots. This concern is amplified by feedback on the base game, where many players felt it was too easy and that the hunter felt overpowered compared to previous installments, often prioritizing cutscenes and story over combat. The introduction of boosted attacks that significantly enhance weapon capabilities has led to understandable apprehension that the difficulty may be further trivialized.

It remains to be seen how these changes will impact the overall player experience. The effectiveness of the Boost Bracer system and whether enemy monsters will be sufficiently strengthened to provide a balanced challenge are key questions that will be answered upon the expansion's release next year.
