Monster Hunter Wilds DLC Director Addresses Difficulty Concerns

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance director Takuro Hiraoka has stated that Capcom is reevaluating its difficulty standards for the expansion's endgame, acknowledging that players have become more skilled than anticipated. The base game's difficulty was initially designed to be accessible to new players, a design choice that led to some players finding it too easy.

Hiraoka explained in an interview that balancing difficulty is a significant challenge for games. The primary goal for Monster Hunter Wilds was to prevent players from abandoning the game due to excessive difficulty, which could deter them from returning. "Maybe players got better than we expected in the intervening years," Hiraoka commented, noting the game's expanded audience since Monster Hunter: World, where many players reportedly stopped playing due to the difficulty ramping up too quickly.

The studio views the player reception to Wilds' difficulty as a learning opportunity. For the Ascendance expansion, Capcom intends to provide a satisfying challenge for experienced players without alienating those who prefer a less demanding experience. "We expect that if you purchase the DLC, you're going to want to see as much of the story that we've presented as possible—but for players who want to go far beyond and have the really toughest challenges, we expect that the endgame loop is what really satisfies their needs," Hiraoka said.

Regarding the new Boost Bracer attacks showcased in recent breakdowns, Hiraoka cautioned that the aggressive displays in videos do not reflect the constant nature of these moves in actual gameplay. He clarified that players will need to manage a gauge and strategically decide when to activate these powerful abilities, as boost mode has a limited duration. "Overall, the player hasn't become this hyperaggressive, constant demon mode type of presence. It's a new tool in your box," he stated. "How to strategize on when to use it, and the way it changes each weapon's gameplay, is for the players to discover." Monser Hunter Wilds: Ascendance is slated for release in 2027.
