Mortal Kombat 2 has found significant success on HBO Max, becoming the platform's top-streaming movie by a considerable margin, according to FlixPatrol. This streaming surge follows a less-than-stellar performance during its theatrical run earlier this year.
The film, which debuted in theaters on May 8, grossed $129 million worldwide against an $80 million production budget. While it opened with $48 million domestically, its final domestic total reached $79.7 million, with an additional $49.7 million from international markets. This performance has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the previously planned Mortal Kombat 3.
Despite the box office results, the movie's digital release on June 9 and subsequent physical release on July 28 paved the way for its appearance on HBO Max in July. It quickly ascended to the number one position on the platform's streaming charts.
Mortal Kombat 2 is the direct sequel to the 2021 reboot, which itself was a streaming success, partly due to its simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max. The original Mortal Kombat film from 1995 remains a fan favorite for its faithfulness to the source material, a stark contrast to its widely panned sequel, Mortal Kombat Annihilation.
Director Simon McQuoid acknowledged in July that it was too early to definitively discuss Mortal Kombat 3, stating the current film hadn't completed its full life cycle. "It's almost like Mortal Kombat 2 hasn't had its full life cycle yet," McQuoid commented. "So I think let it have its full life cycle and then, um, ask me in a few months." He and screenwriter Jeremy Slater reportedly built the sequel with the potential for further installments in mind, emphasizing the importance of audience reception in determining the franchise's future.
Mortal Kombat 2 features a cast including Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Noob Saibot, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion. The film was generally well-received by critics, earning mostly positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences reportedly appreciated the action sequences, the focus on popular characters, and the inclusion of game-accurate Fatalities. Polygon's review, however, described the sequel as "an extremely forgettable movie," yet its current popularity on HBO Max suggests it resonates strongly with a segment of the action movie audience.
