Warner Bros. has announced that Mortal Kombat 2 will begin streaming on HBO Max on July 24. This follows the film's theatrical release on May 8, where it grossed $48 million domestically and $49.7 million internationally, contributing to a global box office total of $129 million.

The digital release for Mortal Kombat 2 is set for June 9, with a physical release on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD scheduled for July 28. This staggered release strategy, culminating in the HBO Max debut, is considered by director Simon McQuoid to be the film's "full life cycle," which may influence decisions regarding a potential Mortal Kombat 3.

The first Mortal Kombat film was a notable success on HBO Max, premiering simultaneously in theaters and on the streaming service as part of Warner Bros.'s 2021 release strategy. The sequel features a cast including Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Noob Saibot, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion.

Mortal Kombat 2 has garnered mixed reviews from critics, with Rotten Tomatoes indicating mostly positive reception. Audiences, however, have reportedly responded more favorably, appreciating the action sequences, focus on popular characters, and game-accurate "Fatalities." Despite this, a review from Polygon described the film as "an extremely forgettable movie," likening it to a series of fight scenes strung together with minimal plot, and noting it as an attempt to address criticisms of the previous film.

While plans for Mortal Kombat 3 were previously in development, its future remains uncertain due to Mortal Kombat 2's performance at the box office, especially considering its reported $80 million budget. McQuoid has stated that Warner Bros. will assess the franchise's future after the film completes its full release cycle across streaming and home video. Fans are hopeful for a resolution to the cliffhangers presented in Mortal Kombat 2.
