The special Revered Edition of the upcoming action-RPG Mortal Shell 2 for PlayStation 5 has sold out across numerous retailers, with publisher Playstack issuing an apology for the limited supply. The scarcity of this premium physical version, priced at $70 and including an art book, suggests a significant demand among dedicated fans, even a month before the game's August 20 release.

Playstack announced on X (formerly Twitter) on July 16 that demand for the physical Revered Edition had surpassed expectations, leading to all available stock being reserved. "We sincerely apologize if you were planning on pre-ordering the Revered Edition and it is no longer available in your territory," the publisher stated. This rapid sell-out has led some players to highlight it as evidence that physical game editions still hold considerable appeal.

Mortal Shell 2, developed by Cold Symmetry, follows the 2020 title and will also be available digitally for $50. The Revered Edition's sold-out status is underscored by listings on eBay already exceeding the original retail price. While a standard physical edition is expected to remain available, the limited edition's swift disappearance has fueled conversations about the future of physical media, particularly as Sony faces criticism regarding its perceived move away from disc-based games with the upcoming PlayStation 6 era.

Industry observers note that this model, offering a higher-priced physical collector's item alongside a standard digital release, could prove successful. Daniel Ahmad, research and insights director at Niko Partners, commented that while this situation is primarily a supply issue, it demonstrates the viability of limited physical releases at a premium price point. The success of the Mortal Shell 2 Revered Edition's pre-orders suggests that a segment of the player base remains invested in tangible game products, even in an increasingly digital market.
