Magic: The Gathering Arena has introduced a new in-game player reporting system, aiming to curb toxic behavior and improve the online experience for its player base. The update, announced on August 17, allows users to report opponents for various offenses, including inactivity, hate speech, inappropriate usernames, verbal abuse, and spamming.
The reporting function is accessible through the game's options menu, challenge lobby, and friends list. Once a report is submitted, it will be processed by GGWP, an AI-powered moderation platform that Wizards of the Coast has partnered with. According to the MTG Arena team, all reports will be manually reviewed by a human, with no automatic actions taken based solely on AI evaluation.
Historically, MTG Arena's social features have been limited, with chat restricted to friends and minimal player interaction. A prevalent issue has been "roping," a tactic where a player intentionally delays the game by letting their turn timer expire when they are about to lose, forcing their opponent to wait. Previously, players could only report such behavior through Wizards of the Coast's support site, often with little to no action taken.
The addition of this reporting tool comes as MTG Arena's development team plans to expand the platform's social capabilities. The reporting feature is currently in a trial phase, with the developers actively seeking player feedback to refine the system and prevent potential abuse of the new tool.
