Cyan Worlds, the studio behind the enduring Myst series, has released a teaser for a canceled game project codenamed Project Anglerfish. The prototype development for this Myst universe entry spanned approximately four months over a year ago, according to creative director Eric Anderson.
This teaser was intended for publisher eyes only and showcases a glimpse into the game's potential direction. The footage depicts a narrative where a character in a green cardigan tasks a guildsman with retrieving a mysterious book from a mansion. As the gameplay progresses, the environment becomes increasingly sinister, with objects malfunctioning and unsettling tentacle-like growths appearing. The book-requester's demeanor also devolves into unhinged pronouncements about the tome.
Development director Hannah Gamiel stated that for "a variety of reasons," the game could not move forward in its current form and is no longer in active development. However, the studio decided to share the teaser as they are proud of the team's work. Anderson confirmed that Cyan Worlds remains dedicated to creating new games and experiences within the Myst universe and will share further information when available.
Last March, Cyan Worlds underwent layoffs, with approximately half of its team being affected. At the time, the studio indicated that securing financing for its next project was their top priority.
