Neon Genesis Evangelion is Getting a VR VR Retelling in 2027

A new VR game based on Neon Genesis Evangelion, titled Evangelion:Δ Cross Reflections, is slated for release in 2027. Developed by Korean studio Pixelity Inc., the project aims to retell the story of the original 1995 anime through a series of three VR games, each exploring an alternate universe.

Players will step into the shoes of a new NERV trainee aspiring to become an Evangelion pilot. The game promises to feature large-scale battles against the series' signature Angels and recreate familiar environments from the anime. While drawing from the original narrative, the trilogy will also introduce new story elements and characters alongside returning faces.

The debut trailer for Evangelion:Δ Cross Reflections offers a glimpse into the planned experience. It depicts familiar scenes rendered in a style players can expect in the final release, including moments like running through NERV HQ, repairing vehicles and Evangelions, and engaging in target practice. The trailer also shows more intimate, unconventional scenes, such as hedgetrimming and sharing cake with characters like Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley. These disparate moments suggest the game will blend established Evangelion tropes with new narrative directions.

This is not the first time the Evangelion franchise has explored alternate realities; numerous games in the late 1990s offered different takes on the series, including dating simulations. The Rebuild of Evangelion film series also presented a reimagined version of the original story. Furthermore, Evangelion has previously ventured into VR with a Japan-exclusive experience that allowed players to pilot an Eva and combat an Angel. However, Evangelion:Δ Cross Reflections appears to be a far more ambitious undertaking.

The upcoming VR trilogy arrives as the Evangelion franchise seeks to define its future following the conclusion of the Rebuild series and creator Hideaki Anno's reduced direct involvement. The planned VR games, alongside a potential Yoko Taro-penned TV series, indicate a growing openness to new interpretations and visions for the enduring franchise, including those that leverage virtual reality technology. The first game in the trilogy is scheduled for a 2027 release, with subsequent installments to follow.
