A new trademark filing for 'Wonders of O' by publisher Neowiz may offer the first substantial clue about the direction of a sequel to its 2023 Soulslike title, Lies of P. The filing appeared on the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) website.
The trademark covers interactive multimedia software for playing games, computer software for network access, and downloadable computer game software, indicating a video game project. Given Neowiz's ownership of the application and the timing following the success of Lies of P, it is strongly suggested that 'Wonders of O' is indeed the successor.
The title 'Wonders of O' bears a notable resemblance to the book series The Oz, which begins with L. Frank Baum's 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'. This connection is further strengthened by a post-credits scene in Lies of P that appeared to feature Dorothy, a central character from the Oz books. This suggests the sequel might draw inspiration from or be set within the world of Oz.
Development of a Lies of P sequel was officially confirmed shortly after the first game's release. In August, a documentary about Lies of P teased that the studio's next project would be "really fun and emotionally moving," suggesting increased ambition. The documentary also highlighted the development philosophy of Round8 Studio's Nough team, which is dedicated to rigorous testing and refinement, describing their approach as making "games by gamers."
Director Choi Jiwon stated in the documentary, "We're giving it everything we have to make it the best it can be. So please, just wait a little longer. You won't be disappointed, we promise. This is the truth, not a lie." This sentiment aligns thematically with the Pinocchio-inspired narrative of Lies of P.
Eurogamer's review of Lies of P awarded it three stars, noting its "strong foundations in its edgy tone and tweaked weapons" but questioning its ability to surpass its inspirations.
