The upcoming live-action Gundam film being developed by Netflix is described as a "big action-romance space movie," according to star Noah Centineo. In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Centineo elaborated on the film's premise, likening it to "a non-Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet in space." This suggests a narrative centered on star-crossed lovers caught on opposite sides of a long-standing conflict, a theme that aligns with the core lore of the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, particularly its frequent focus on the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon.

Centineo confirmed that the film will be set within the Universal Century timeline, the continuity that hosts many of the most iconic entries in the Gundam saga, including the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. While the specific placement within this timeline remains undisclosed, concept art released in 2021, prior to director Jim Mickle taking over from Jordan Vogt-Roberts, depicted the RX-78-2 Gundam suit, a clear nod to the franchise's origins.

The movie boasts a cast that includes Sydney Sweeney alongside Centineo, as well as Jason Isaacs (Star Trek: Discovery) and Michael Mando (Spider-Man: Brand New Day). Filming concluded recently at the end of July, though Netflix has not yet announced a release date.

This live-action adaptation is part of a broader expansion of the Gundam universe. Fans can also anticipate the animated series Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, slated for release in 2027, and a new game titled Gundam Rogue Orbit, which is set to launch next year.
