Paramount+ has moved up the premiere date for the upcoming animated film "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender" to July 25, shifting it from its originally planned October release. While the film has been seen by some in advance, this earlier launch on the streaming platform arrives with little fanfare.
The animated sequel reportedly features adult versions of the series' main heroes, with creators acknowledging a conscious effort to lean into their mature portrayals. "He’s hot, he’s tall and ripped, broad shouldered, and he looks great, but he’s not quite the adult Avatar that he needs to be yet," creator Bryan Konietzko told EW, referring to Aang. "So this film is really trying to dive into that."
Notes from early viewings suggest that Aang has undergone a significant physical transformation, depicted as powerfully built and often attired in outfits that emphasize his physique. The film's animation is described as stunning, with particular attention paid to rendering the characters in a way that highlights their adult forms. This includes Aang's toned physique, which is a prominent aspect of his character design throughout the movie.
Beyond Aang, the rest of the original cast, including Toph, Zuko, Katara, and Sokka, have also received updated designs that emphasize their strength and maturity. Their animated portrayals highlight toned physiques and graceful movement in combat, indicating a deliberate choice by Avatar Studios to present these characters with an "equal-opportunity fanservice" approach. The film's visual style aims to make all the characters, not just Aang, striking and powerful.
A full review of "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender" is expected closer to the film's premiere.
