DC Comics is introducing Verity Pennyworth as Batman's new butler in the upcoming issue of Batman #12, officially filling the role left vacant since the death of Alfred Pennyworth in 2019's "City of Bane" storyline.
The identity of the new butler had been the subject of fan speculation for some time, with theories ranging from character re-imaginings to entirely new creations. Artist Jorge Jiménez confirmed the character's identity as Verity Pennyworth via an Instagram post, which coincided with the reveal of a "Verity Pennyworth Design Variant" cover for Batman #12.
While the full extent of Verity's connection to Alfred Pennyworth remains undisclosed, the official solicitation for Batman #12 hints at her significance. The issue's synopsis states that "the late Alfred Pennyworth provides a gift from beyond the grave with the arrival of a brilliant new ally to the Bat-Family at a time when it needs one most."
Alfred Pennyworth was a central figure in Batman's life for decades before his death during Tom King's tenure on the main Batman title. Initially intended as a temporary event, Alfred's demise was made permanent by DC publisher Dan DiDio following a strong fan reaction.
Since 2025, writer Matt Fraction has explored Batman's relationship with his deceased butler in his ongoing series, often depicting Batman conversing with an apparition of Alfred. Fraction clarified during an Ask Me Anything session that this spectral Alfred serves as a moral guide, akin to a Jiminy Cricket figure.
The introduction of a living Pennyworth suggests that Batman may gain a new moral compass. Batman #12 is scheduled for release on August 5.
