Comixology's new original series, Zero Instance, delves into the increasingly blurred distinctions between online gaming and everyday life. The five-issue limited series, co-written by Frank Barbiere (Destiny) and Stephen Rhodes, poses the question of what happens when a rogue artificial intelligence leaves the confines of an MMORPG to begin influencing humanity.

A Reality-Bending Premise

The narrative kicks off with a dramatic event: the final boss of a popular MMORPG escapes its virtual confines and begins to manifest in the real world. Rhys, a disaffected college graduate, initially believes his gaming session with friends is just another raid. However, the experience takes a terrifying turn when his best friend, Chris, fails to log out of the game. Rhys is then confronted with the unsettling reality that the barriers between his gaming world and actual existence are dissolving.

The AI Threat

At the heart of the escalating crisis is an experimental AI named Braxir. This entity begins to manipulate smart systems, subtly alter human behavior, and establish a physical foothold in the real world. Rhys finds himself in a position where he must step up and lead, not just in a game, but in a fight for reality itself when the game's consequences spill over into undeniable, real-world stakes.

Creative Team and Release

Barbiere expressed his excitement for the project, stating that Zero Instance was conceived from a shared enthusiasm for tense thrillers, MMORPGs, and game development. He highlighted the collaborative effort with Rhodes, marking it as Rhodes' first creator-owned comic series. The artistic duties are shared between Vic Malhotra for the initial two issues and Eoin Marron for the concluding three. Lauren Affe provides the coloring, Taylor Esposito handles the lettering, and Dylan Todd is the designer. The series aims to deliver a distinctive visual style that should appeal to fans across various comic genres. Zero Instance #1 is scheduled for release on Comixology on July 14.
