Dark Horse Comics is launching a new ongoing Dungeons & Dragons series in November that will feature legendary dragons and provide Dungeon Masters with stats and lore for use in their tabletop campaigns. The series, announced at San Diego Comic-Con, brings together iconic D&D characters Mordenkainen, Volo, and Tasha to confront a draconic apocalypse.

Mordenkainen, a legendary wizard created by D&D co-creator Gary Gygax, has been stripped of his magic in this new narrative and must rely on the scholarly Volo and the powerful witch Tasha. These characters are well-known within the D&D community, having lent their names and lore to various sourcebooks such as Volo’s Guide to Monsters and Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. This series marks a departure from their usual role of narrating or providing game mechanics, placing them directly into an adventuring narrative.

The comic is written by Eisner Award-nominees Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, with art by Ibraim Roberson, inks by Arabson Oliveira, colors by Dan Brown, and lettering by Haley-Rose Lyon. The series expands Dark Horse's existing D&D comic line, which includes titles like The Fallbacks and Ravenloft.

Each issue will include variant covers by artists such as Esad Ribić, Tyler Jacobson, Karen Darboe, Mateus Manhanini, and Eric Canete. Antonio J. Manzanedo, who has contributed to D&D and Magic: The Gathering projects, will provide foil variant covers for each issue. These special editions will include the in-game statistics and background lore for the dragons featured in the story, enabling Dungeon Masters to incorporate them into their own games. One of the revealed dragons appears to be Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon and god of good-aligned dragons.

In addition to the main story and campaign assets, the first issue will feature an essay by voice actor Erika Ishii. Subsequent issues will include contributions from other RPG personalities and further content for Dungeon Masters. Dungeons & Dragons #1 is set to release on November 4 and is available for preorder at comic book stores for $4.99.
