Sony is reportedly developing a new live-action film in the Ghostbusters franchise, tentatively titled Ghostbusters: Nightmare on 34th Street. The movie is said to be a Christmas-themed entry, with Josh Miller attached to write the script. Miller previously worked on the Sonic the Hedgehog films and the action-comedy Violent Night.
The title Nightmare on 34th Street appears to be a play on both the horror franchise A Nightmare on Elm Street and the classic 1947 Christmas film Miracle on 34th Street. Details regarding the plot or cast are currently sparse.
This potential new film follows a recent string of Ghostbusters projects. The franchise saw a reboot in 2016 with an all-female main cast, which met with mixed critical reception and fan backlash, ultimately leading to a soft reboot of the original continuity with 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife. That film centered on the descendants of Egon Spengler and was followed by a 2024 sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. The director of Frozen Empire, Gil Kenan, has publicly stated he is working on a direct sequel to that film.
In addition to potential live-action sequels, Sony Pictures Animation is developing an animated Ghostbusters film for Netflix. A television series, Ghostbusters: Night Shift, is also slated for release on Netflix in 2027. It appears the Ghostbusters universe is expanding across multiple platforms and formats.
