A new God of War game featuring the original protagonist, Kratos, has been announced by PlayStation's Santa Monica Studio. Game director Cory Barlog confirmed the news at San Diego Comic-Con, revealing that the upcoming title will directly follow the events of the previously announced God of War Laufey.
While specific details regarding Kratos' next adventure remain scarce, Barlog indicated that it will be released after God of War Laufey, which is slated for a February 16, 2027 release on PS5. Laufey's story will see the titular character embark on a journey to the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, to protect Kratos and Atreus by confronting divine opposition.
The new Kratos-centric game is expected to build upon the narrative threads established in Laufey, potentially hinting at Kratos' exploration of new mythologies beyond Greek and Norse, such as Egyptian and Tibetan pantheons. Kratos' most recent major appearance was in 2022's God of War Ragnarök, preceded by the release of God of War Sons of Sparta earlier this year, a prequel focusing on a younger Kratos. A remake of the original God of War trilogy is also in development, though information on that project is limited.
