New Halo Game Unlikely for Years as Studio Faces Closure

The future of the Halo franchise is uncertain, with reports indicating that a new mainline game is likely many years away and will be developed by a new team under Activision. Meanwhile, a small group of developers at Halo Studios is said to be working on one last content update for the recently released Halo: Campaign Evolved before the studio's potential closure.

A report from Rebs Gaming, citing sources, suggests that approximately 30 individuals not affected by recent Xbox layoffs are continuing to work on Halo: Campaign Evolved. This team, reportedly led by Halo Studios boss Pierre Hintze, aims to deliver Firefight mode and a Theater Mode as free content updates. Firefight, a popular horde mode from previous Halo titles, could be a significant addition, though plans may shift based on the team's capabilities. Following these efforts and the upcoming Halo Fest event in December, the studio is expected to shut down.

Crucially, this remaining team at Halo Studios has no direct connection with Activision, the company now overseeing the Halo franchise. Furthermore, no members from Halo Studios are expected to transition to the new team being assembled by Activision to guide the future of Halo. This separation, coupled with past rumors of Activision considering a soft or total reboot of the series, points to a lengthy development period for any future Halo titles, which may bear little resemblance to the direction Halo Studios had envisioned.

While a new Halo game remains distant, concept art recently shared by the studio offers a glimpse into what might have been. These images depict Forerunner structures and alien environments, reportedly including ideas for a sequel to Halo Infinite. Some of this concept art is believed to represent ideas developed by former Halo lead Joseph Staten before his departure in 2023, while other pieces were created after his exit as the studio explored concepts for Halo 7. One particular image, showcasing a swampy environment on Zeta Halo with large trees and a Banished Skiff, has been identified as a concept from Staten for the next installment.

These unfulfilled concepts include intriguing elements such as the Endless, an alien race introduced in Halo Infinite who were apparently immune to the Halo rings' effects. It is speculated that the Endless could have played a significant role in the rumored canceled Halo Infinite DLC and a potential future entry. However, with the studio's uncertain future and Activision taking the reins, these narrative threads and potential game directions may never come to fruition. The situation leaves many talented developers out of work and signals a long wait for the next chapter in the Halo saga.
