The long-awaited search for the next actor to portray James Bond has concluded, with screenwriter Steven Knight confirming the casting in a recent interview. Knight, known for creating the series Peaky Blinders, is penning the script for the upcoming Bond film, which is set to reboot the franchise under Amazon's ownership.
Speaking with Radio 4’s Today program, Knight stated that knowing the actor who will play Bond has made the writing process more manageable. "It does make life a little bit easier if you know who that person is, but also you have to write the character, not the actor," he explained. Knight also shared his perspective on the immense pressure associated with the role, likening it to a duty for British writers. He emphasized that while the Bond universe is distinct from superhero franchises like DC or Marvel, it is essential to evolve the character while retaining its core British identity.
While an official announcement has yet to be made, speculation has surrounded several actors for the coveted role. Names reportedly in contention include Jack Barton, Jack Lowden, Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal, and Harris Dickinson. Aaron Taylor-Johnson has also been a subject of rumors, particularly after signing a deal with Omega, the official watchmaker for the Bond franchise. Amazon, having acquired creative control of the series, has enlisted Nina Gold, an Academy Award-winning casting director known for her work on Game of Thrones, for the reboot.
Fans may receive more information around October 5th, which is celebrated as James Bond Day to commemorate the release of Dr. No. The new film is expected to be directed by Denis Villeneuve, though principal photography is not anticipated to begin until after the release of his Dune: Part 3 in December. This marks the first casting since Daniel Craig's final appearance as James Bond in No Time to Die, released nearly five years ago.
