Santa Monica Studio head of creative Cory Barlog has confirmed that the next God of War game focusing on Kratos will arrive after the release of God of War Laufey and will directly connect to her narrative. The announcement was made during the God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

While specific details regarding the new Kratos-led title remain scarce, including its release window, target platforms, or official name, Barlog elaborated on the studio's vision for the franchise's future during the panel. He stated that the events in God of War Laufey are designed as a continuation of the existing story and will serve to "set up and expand what comes next."

This direction aligns with previous statements from Santa Monica Studio. In June, Barlog mentioned in a PlayStation YouTube interview that "there's always going to be Kratos games," a sentiment echoed by the studio's official social media, which indicated a desire to "tell many more stories with him."

God of War Laufey is slated for release on February 16, 2027. Early reactions to glimpses of Laufey's gameplay have been divided, with praise for its combat and visuals tempered by criticism of simplistic gameplay in its initial sections and the absence of Kratos as the central figure. Barlog acknowledged these varied reactions, emphasizing that while Laufey explores different characters and expands the series' tapestry, "there's always going to be Kratos games" throughout the franchise's history.

Footage shown for God of War Laufey depicted Kratos and Atreus burning Faye's body, a scene referencing the 2018 God of War. Kratos also appears briefly assisting Faye while she is imprisoned in the gameplay segment. It is currently unclear if Kratos will feature more prominently in Laufey or if these appearances are his extent in the game, given his ongoing narrative following God of War Ragnarök.

In addition to future Kratos-centric adventures, Santa Monica Studio is also in the early stages of development for a remake of the original God of War trilogy. The first game launched in 2005 for the PlayStation 2, followed by its sequel in 2007 and God of War 3 in 2010 for the PlayStation 3. No release date has been announced for the trilogy remake.
