New Pokémon ROM Hack Overhauls Infamous Bug-Type

Despite the presence of popular Pokémon like Butterfree and Heracross, the Bug-type has long been the least favored in the franchise. This perception stems from both the type's real-world association with insects, which many find unpleasant, and its numerous in-game weaknesses. To address this, a new ROM hack called Pokémon BugLime has been developed, focusing on revitalizing the Bug-type.

Built on the foundation of Pokémon FireRed, BugLime significantly rebalances the Bug-type, making even its least popular monsters interesting and competitive. The game features 94 Bug-type Pokémon from across the series, augmented by several Pokémon that have been reclassified as Bug-types. Many existing Bug-types have received new elemental typings, adjusted stats, fresh movesets, and altered evolution methods, all aimed at redeeming the underappreciated category.

In BugLime, Bug-type Pokémon are central to the gameplay experience. Non-player characters and gym leaders exclusively use Bug-type Pokémon. Gym leaders, however, can utilize dual typings to maintain their thematic connections to their original elemental types. While based on an older Pokémon game, the ROM hack integrates mechanics from newer generations, such as shiny charms, and introduces its own quality-of-life improvements. These include unlimited TMs, the ability to delete HMs, and the early acquisition of the Experience Share item. Players can choose from three Bug-type starters: Tarountula, Surskit, and Sizzlipede.

"The objective is to make all Bug-Types fun to use, not necessarily 'realistic' changes," creator spearmintz stated on a Pokémon forum. Players can download Pokémon BugLime to experience this unique take on the series. For those finding the Bug-type focus overwhelming, the game also includes the option to use Repels.
