The Pokémon Trading Card Game is set to feature a distinctive new art style with the upcoming release of the Delta Reign set. Tayu, an artist recognized for their unique approach to character illustration, will debut their first official Pokémon TCG cards. Tayu's work, characterized by intricate embroidery, offers a fresh tactile medium to the collectible card game, joining established artists who utilize materials like clay and yarn.
Tayu's entry into the official Pokémon TCG art world follows their recognition as a runner-up in the 2024 Pokémon illustration contest. While the grand prize winner presented a Pikachu illustration, Tayu's submission of an embroidered Feraligatr garnered attention for its creative execution. Now, this artistic style will be available to collectors through purchasable cards.
The first card featuring Tayu's work will be an embroidered depiction of Nidoran, set to release on November 6th. This card will be part of the Rayquaza-themed Delta Reign set, which also coincides with the Pokémon TCG's 30th-anniversary collection. While the card's in-game power or resale market value remains to be seen, its unique artistry is highlighted as a significant draw for collectors, particularly the reverse holofoil version of the Nidoran card.
The Delta Reign set is expected to be a notable release, featuring contributions from other seasoned Pokémon TCG artists such as Jerky, Shinji Kanda, and Akira Egawa. Secret rare cards showcasing popular Pokémon like Growlithe, Groudon, and Kecleon are also anticipated. Tayu's inclusion and the distinctiveness of their Nidoran card are expected to make them stand out even within this artistically rich set. Tayu has also submitted other embroidered works, including Eevee and Flygon, for the 2024 competition, indicating a continued interest in applying their textile art to the Pokémon brand.
