New PS5 Update Released Amidst Security Concerns Ahead of GTA 6 Launch

Sony has released a new PlayStation 5 system update, version 26.07-14.20.00. The official patch notes state that the update aims to improve messages and usability on certain screens. While this is a minor upgrade for the average user, it arrives at a time of increased scrutiny on PS5 security.

Users within the PS5 homebrew and jailbreaking communities are reportedly wary of the update, as it could potentially patch vulnerabilities exploited by recent hacking efforts. The "Relapse" exploit, which was effective on PS5 firmware versions prior to the September 16 release of version 14.00.00, allowed for the jailbreaking of most retail consoles to run pirated games. This situation presents a significant challenge for Sony, particularly with the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 scheduled for November 19.

Speculation suggests that Sony may be prioritizing security enhancements for the PS5 in anticipation of the GTA 6 release. It is possible that future updates could make it mandatory for consoles to be updated to the latest firmware, such as version 14.20, to ensure proper functionality for the new title. This follows September's substantial PS5 update, which introduced features for PS5 Pro owners, improved voice chat, and refined existing system functions.
