Blizzard has officially announced a new entry in the StarCraft series, revealed at BlizzCon 2026. In a surprising departure from its real-time strategy roots, the upcoming game is being developed as an open-world shooter. While a release date has not been set, Blizzard is targeting 2030 for its debut.

Blizzard general manager Dan Hay stated that the game was announced early to gather feedback, noting that the development team felt they had established enough of the game's core emotion and identity to begin sharing it. "About a year ago, we started to feel like we were there, so we were like, ‘Okay, it’s time to show it. It’s time to get feedback,'" Hay explained.

While official platforms remain unconfirmed, PC is a near certainty. Given the projected release window, the game may also launch for next-generation consoles, potentially including Sony's PlayStation 6 and Microsoft's successor to the Xbox, codenamed Project Helix.

The gameplay will shift drastically from the franchise's traditional RTS format. The new StarCraft will be a third-person experience with an emphasis on single-player and co-op modes. Players will step into the power armor of a Dominion Marine, with a focus on building reputation and rapport with in-game characters. "Combat has to feel powerful," Hay said. "You're in this armor; you're a living tank. You have to feel powerful. When you hold that Gauss rifle, and the thing weighs something ridiculous, you have to feel like you’re just pushing through the Zerg." The development team aims for players to experience a sense of discovery and the impact of their actions within the game world, described as a "notion of disruption."

Regarding its live-service model, Blizzard intends for StarCraft to feel like a complete "boxed product" with a definitive conclusion to its story, allowing players to return to it at their leisure. The game will feature a named protagonist, aiming to lend more life to the narrative.

The story is set 70 years after StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void. The cinematic trailer depicted new Dominion recruits facing intense battles against Zerg forces, with indications of Protoss involvement as well. This time jump allows for new narrative possibilities and characters amidst the established galactic conflicts, including the Protoss reclaiming Aiur and the Zerg leadership seeking peace.
