The newest live-action Street Fighter movie, released on October 16, has achieved a significant box office milestone for the franchise, earning $31 million domestically during its opening weekend. This figure places it well ahead of its predecessors and establishes a new record for the long-running series.
Previous adaptations had considerably lower opening weekend earnings. The 1994 Street Fighter, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, opened to $6.8 million domestically and concluded its theatrical run with $99 million worldwide. The 2010 film, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, performed even more modestly, grossing just $4.7 million domestically and $12.7 million worldwide. The recent film's opening weekend revenue surpasses the combined opening weekend totals of both prior live-action movies.
Beyond its box office success, the 2026 Street Fighter film is also resonating with audiences, holding a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a marked improvement compared to the 20% score for the 1994 film and the 18% score for The Legend of Chun-Li.
Despite its strong opening and positive audience reception, the movie faces the challenge of recouping its $82 million budget. It also drew comparisons to Mortal Kombat 2, which opened to $38.5 million domestically and grossed $129 million worldwide earlier in the year against an $80 million budget. The film's ending teases a potential sequel, hinting at the possibility of Street Fighter 2.
The movie was directed and co-written by Kitao Sakurai. The cast includes Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, and Callina Liang as Chun-Li. Notable appearances also feature Joe Anoa'i as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Curtis Jackson as Balrog, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, and Mel Jarnson as Cammy, among others.
