To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original Tomb Raider, developers Crystal Dynamics, Flying Wild Hog, and publisher Amazon Game Studios have released a new trailer for the upcoming remake, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. The footage highlights faithful recreations of iconic locations and challenges from the 1996 game, reimagined with contemporary visual fidelity.
Revisiting Legendary Locations
The trailer offers glimpses of the game's four main settings: Peru, Greece, Egypt, and the mythical Atlantis. Players can expect to encounter familiar puzzles, such as the giant Atlas puzzle, and battle adversaries like the monstrous Atlanteans. A particularly striking moment shows the consequence of interacting with King Midas' statue, transforming Lara Croft into gold with modern visual effects.
While the remake aims for faithfulness to the original's spirit, it will incorporate modern gameplay elements. Game director Raul Siquera detailed the new 'Focus' meter, which builds as players deal and take damage. Activating Focus slows down time, allowing Lara to perform her signature acrobatic moves, inspired by her classic capabilities.
The game will also feature skill trees and crafting mechanics, expanding on the original's foundational gameplay. This blend of classic and modern design aims to satisfy long-time fans while appealing to new players.
Release Details and Future Adventures
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is scheduled for release on February 12, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Players who pre-order the game will receive a special bonus: a costume inspired by Lara Croft's look from the Survivor trilogy. Deluxe and Collector's Edition versions will offer early access by 48 hours.
Looking beyond Legacy of Atlantis, Crystal Dynamics has announced another Tomb Raider title, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, also slated for 2027. This next installment will send Lara Croft on a new adventure to Northern India, exploring ancient secrets and mysterious forces following a mythical cataclysm. The game is described as marking a bold new direction for the series.
