Cory Barlog, head of creative at Santa Monica Studio, has revealed that the next mainline installment in the God of War series, starring Kratos, will directly continue the story from the events of the upcoming God of War Laufey. Barlog made these statements during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, emphasizing that the studio's current work on the Faye game is intended to "set up and expand what comes next."
He elaborated that "everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next." Barlog also noted the significance of characters like Phranque, who has been part of the series since its inception, and how their integration helps to further build out the game's world. "Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing," he stated.
While God of War Laufey will feature new characters and narrative threads, Barlog assured fans that Kratos will remain a presence throughout the series' history. "Faye is, while it's a different thing, it's still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly really want to explore, all of these different characters in there. But there's always going to be Kratos games, like, throughout the whole history. We're super excited about that."
God of War Laufey is slated for release on February 16, 2027, a date confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con. The announcement was positioned as a significant part of this year's Summer Game Fest and a record-breaking State of Play presentation. Much of the discussion following the reveal has centered on the new protagonist, Faye. According to actress Deborah Ann Woll, the concept for Faye's character originated as early as the 2018 God of War reboot.
Woll has expressed indifference towards any negative criticism surrounding the game's reveal, stating she is "totally unbothered" because she believes the game is "great." However, a PC port for God of War Laufey is not planned, as Sony has shifted its strategy away from releasing non-live-service games on PC.
