Nexus Mods has updated its policies regarding the use of artificial intelligence in user-submitted content, introducing more specific tagging requirements and outlining consequences for failure to comply. The changes aim to provide users with greater clarity and control over the mods they download.

Previously, Nexus Mods used a general "AI-Generated Content" tag. However, user feedback indicated this was insufficient, lacking the nuance needed to filter mods effectively. The platform will now implement several new tags to differentiate between various types of AI involvement. These include tags for AI-generated content such as code, voices, and music; AI-generated promotional media, like "crappy, glossy jpegs" used for mod advertisements; and AI-assisted content, which denotes minimal or non-invasive AI use by developers who still possess core coding knowledge.

A key update is Nexus Mods' explicit stance on misrepresentation. The platform now states that "Failure to correctly tag mods, including undisclosed generative AI usage, may be subject to moderation action." This policy is reinforced by an option for users to report mods for "Miscategorised Content."

While the new rules are a step towards addressing concerns about AI-generated content flooding modding platforms, the approach is described as relatively lenient. The effectiveness of these measures in curbing the influx of what some consider low-quality AI-generated material remains to be seen.
